23/1/10 - interview with RTBF journalist in Rwanda - ACTIVITIES REPORT
(25.01.10)
Today morning, the Chairperson of UDF-Inkingi, Ms. Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza received Ms. Françoise Wallemacq of the RTBF television based in Belgium.
n a 45-minute long interview, Ms. Umuhoza explained the aims and objectives of UDF-Inkingi and how UDF plan to implement them in Rwanda.
They also discussed the following issues:
- Reasons UDF-Inkingi has decided to become a political party based in Rwanda
- Views of UDF-Inkingi on issues of reconciliation
- Issues of inequality in access to economic opportunities in hand of a small number of people compared to the vast majority of Rwanda living in severe deprivation. This issue has the potentiality of bringing insecurity in Rwanda.
- Issue of the ethnicity that has been made a taboo by the Rwandan government while at the same time the government still makes statements around it, for instance, that the only political parties that will be allowed to work in the country will be those that can prove to advocate the unity of all ethnic groups based in Rwanda.
- The presidential election scheduled to be held in August 2010.
In addition to the above, she also mentioned the following important issues:
- Lack of freedom of expression and wide spread fear of injustice within the Rwandan society
- Electoral law that has not yet been decided upon
- Current electoral commission that is composed mainly by members of RPF party. This does not give UDF-Inkingi the confidence that the election will be free and fair.
